In Real Life
The jaguar is one of South and Central America's largest mammals, their largest cat species, and the only native extant big cat (genus Panthera) in either region. They once roamed from the southern tip of Argentina all the way north to what is now the U.S.-Mexico border; today, their range is much more constricted. The jaguar is a capable and adaptable species which makes its home in a wide variety of habitats including deciduous forests, rainforests, swamps, pampas grasslands and mountain scrub areas. Unlike many other cats, jaguars do not avoid water; in fact, not only are they adept swimmers, but their lifestyle often depends on being near water. Lakes, rivers and marshes provide the jaguar with abundant prey in the form of capybara, fish, turtles, and even such dangerous game as pythons and caimans should the opportunity present itself.
While they sometimes dispatch their prey with a suffocating direct bite to the throat, or they instantly kill them by piercing the back of the skull with their canines. Their powerful jaws and canines allow them to get through thick reptilian skin and turtle carapaces. The jaguar hunts mostly on the ground, but it sometimes climbs a tree and pounces on its prey from above. Due to the large size and dominant nature of the Jaguar, there are no other wild animals that are known to actually consider it as prey. Jaguars are strictly carnivores. They eat a wide variety of prey, over 85 species have been reported in the diet of jaguars.
Jaguars are most active near dusk and dawn, although they may be active at any time of the day. They tend to rest mid-morning and afternoon. Jaguars lay in deep shade, under thick vegetation, in caves, or under large rocks when resting. They also rest near river banks and may be forced to rest in trees during flood seasons. Jaguars are dependent on water, especially during the dry season when they seek relief from heat.
Once found throughout the South American continent, they have been hunted by Humans mainly for their fur which has led to drastic declines in Jaguar population numbers everywhere. The jaguar is fully protected at the national level across most of its range, with hunting prohibited. With habitat fragmentation a major threat, and taxonomic research suggesting little significant differences among jaguar populations, an ambitious program has been launched to conserve a continuous north to south habitat corridor through the species range
Trivia
- Jaguars are competent climbers, and will scale trees. They often use their vantage point among the branches to pounce on unsuspecting prey below.
- Jaguars can see six times better than humans at night or during darker conditions due to a layer of tissue in the back of the eye that reflects light.
- Jaguars tend to be shy and avoid human interaction, as they do not have the need to hunt humans.
- Jaguars are typically seen as an important cultural and religious symbol for ancient civilizations throughout Latin America, denoting strength and power.
- They possess rosettes that aid them in seamlessly blending into the understory, utilizing the dappled light and shadow cast by sunlight filtering through the canopy. This camouflage allows them to remain concealed, effectively ambushing their prey.
