In Real Life
The Silky anteater, also called pygmy or dwarf anteater, is a nocturnal mammal native to central and southern America. They're the smallest of all anteaters with as length of only 45 centimeters of which roughly half is the tail and a weight of less than 350 gram. They have very silky and fluffy fur which is creamy coloured. Their big eyes help them see in the dark of the night. They have one big claw on their front paws and five toes on their hind paws which they use together with their tail to climb on and between trees they live on. If possible, they will never leave the trees.
Silky Anteaters use their claws to dig into ant nests to eat roughly 5,000 ants each night; they also eat other insects and small beetles. Their tongue has a thick mucus coat making ants stick to it. During the day they curl up into a ball resembling seedpods of the silk-cotton tree, fooling even predators with great eyesight. After a pregnancy of around half year, a single offspring is born. The young live in small nests initially and both parents will take care of them. They're fed regurgitated insects by their parents and the father will carry them around on their back from time to time. If they feel threatened, they will stand on their hind legs and raise their front claws in front of their faces, assuming a stance similar to boxers.
Habitat loss is the main threat to the silky anteater populations, though their numbers are stable. They often fall prey to large hawks, eagles and jaguars; humans often capture them to keep them as pets. Due to them only being active at night and rather well hidden, not much is known of the silky anteater.
