Short-Beaked Common Dolphin, also known by her nickname Mairuka, is a Friend in Kemono Friends 3 that appears in both versions of the game. She is given out to all players upon completion of Chapter 3.

Personality

Short-Beaked Common Dolphin is friendly, curious, and playful to a fault, always eager for a game or a contest anywhere, anytime. Her childlike nature can lead her to be somewhat absent-minded and occasionally blunt, and can cause her to act recklessly if someone isn't around to rein her in, but she nonetheless continues to build a distinction between work and play and develop a greater sense of responsibility. This, in addition to her talent as a powerful swimmer, makes her a key asset to the JSRT when she joins their ranks.

Despite her childish nature, which entails a persistent curiosity about the world around her, she can be deceptively clever; asking so many questions as she does allows her to arrive at conclusions others may not have considered, or help others notice pieces they had been missing when trying to solve a puzzle, and she has her share of bright ideas where it counts.

Being very boisterous means "quiet and tactful" isn't particularly Short-Beaked Common Dolphon's strong suit. Even this can prove useful sometimes, as it in conjunction with her strong sense of urgency makes Mairuka adept at raising the alarm when something is amiss; she just needs to get better at quickly conveying what the problem itself is, as her tendency to address most situations with the same level of enthusiasm means her companions are often unsure of what the dilemma actually is until it is actively upon them. In general, communication is not always this Friend's strong suit; much like any other child, it is common that while she knows what she is thinking and what she needs to do, Mairuka needs to be coaxed in order to share that thought with others before jumping directly into acting on it.

Role in the Plot

Short-Beaked Common Dolphin is first met when the JSRT team lands in the tropical Riukiu Region. The player and their Friend companions help her locate and rescue Blue Whale after the latter goes missing during what should have been a routine Cellien cleanup along the coast.

She is familiar with Mirai and Serval, having journeyed alongside them prior to the events of Kemono Friends 3.

Relationships

Bald Eagle

Bald Eagle takes a liking to Short-Beaked Common Dolphin quickly, seeing her good nature shining right away and only having this further confirmed as she observes the cetacean Friend's skill, courage and honesty in action.

Blue Whale

Short-Beaked Common Dolphin looks up to Blue Whale as a maternal figure, calling her Mother as numerous other Friends of the Riukiu Region do; of these Friends, Mairuka seems to be particularly close with Blue Whale. She has a lot of faith in Blue Whale's abilities, but can also sense when something is amiss with her.

Dhole

Dhole and Short-Beaked Common Dolphin get along quite well; among the various JSRT members, Dhole is the closest to Mairuka's wavelength.

Meerkat

Short-Beaked Common Dolphin is excited to learn under Meerkat; their dynamic as student and teacher occurs very naturally, and Meerkat is quick to take a shine to Short-Beaked Common Dolphin when the Friends first meet. Meer-sensei is adept at grounding Short-Beaked Common Dolphin before she gets carried away, and is able to keep her in line even in the face of protest from Mairuka; keeping a frustrated child in check is no mean feat, and suggests a good level of trust between the two Friends.
