Gannan Yak is a type of bovid Friend first introduced by Kemono Friends 3 in December 2020.

Appearance

Gannan Yak has a long white hair tied together into two thick tails at the back. Her unkempt bangs are covering one of her brown eyes. She has large animal ears and dark curly horns. She is in a yellow short-sleeved shirt, a white summer dress on top tied by a tassel belt. She wears leather bracers, black gloves and beige boots. She has a thick, beige tassel-like tail.

The Gannan Yak is a breed of Yak living in the high altitudes of the Tibetan Plateau. As opposed to other chattle, selective breeding is not as advanced in the Domestic Yak, so most breeds yet to have many specific traits. The breed is named after the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture within the Gansu Province in China where the Yak is traditionally held and bred. They are large and fertile compared to other breeds. They're suitable for riding and as working animals, as well as a source of meat and wool.

While the Gannan Yak is predominantly black, they can also be white-spotted on black, grey or yellow and white. They have well-developed muscles, a large skull, small ears usually horns but they may also be hornless. Their legs are short but strong. Males weigh around 350-550 kilograms and can be up to 1.3 m high at the withers while females being a bit shorter and lighter. Both sexes have very long shaggy hair with a wooly undercoat to protect them against the cold in the high altitudes of Tibet. The hair usually hangs down like a skirt and can even reach the ground. They have more horse-like tails than cow-like tails.

Male Yaks typically live in bachelor herds for most of the year. They fight and establish dominance as the mating seasons starts in the summer. The Pregnancy lasts for around 270 days so the calf is born in the spring. The calf is weaned after a year and becomes independent. Unless food is abundant, females only give birth once every other year.

Trivia

• Both wild and domesticated yaks possess large lungs, a high red blood cell count, and higher concentration of haemoglobin than most other bovids. These factors allow them to live in higher elevations that would give other, non-acclimated animals elevation sickness.
