Commerson's dolphins are a very distinctive dolphin species with black on the head, fin and flipper parts and largely white at the throat and the rest of the body. The dorsal fin is small and with rounded tip. The beak is unnoticeably small. They are very active and rapid swimmers. They leap from water and also spin and twist while swimming. They are also known to swim upside-down, which is thought to help spot their preys. | |||
Being one of the smallest dolphins they reach up to 1.2 to 1.7 m (3.9 to 5.6 ft.) in length, with females are typically larger than males. They can weighs up to 35 to 60 kg (77 to 132 lbs.). | |||
Commerson's dolphins have two distinct subspecies living apart from each other. The main subspecies can be found off the southern coast of South America and another in shallow wasters near the Kerguelen Islands, a group of sub-Antarctic islands in the south of Indian Ocean. The reason for the two populations being separated such a long distance is still unknown. The dolphins appear to be opportunistic, feeding on mix of coastal and pelagic fish and squids.
