The Gannan yak is a breed of yak living in the high altitudes of the Tibetan Plateau, being associated with the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture within China's Gansu province, where the yak is traditionally held and bred. Unlike many other cattle, selective breeding is not as advanced in the domestic yak, so most breeds have yet to see the emergence of specific, desired traits. The Gannan yak are known for their large size and fertility compared to other domestic cattle breeds; they are suitable for riding and as working animals, and are a strong source of meat and wool.

While the Gannan yak is predominantly black in color, their coats can also feature patches of white, and the coats of domestic yaks can vary greatly; black, brown, ruddy, white, gray, and cream coats are all known to exist. They have well-developed muscles, large skull structures, and small ears; most yaks have horns, but some may be hornless. Their legs are short but strong. Males weigh around 350-550 kilograms and can be up to 1.3 m high at the withers while females are lighter and stand slightly shorter. Both sexes have very long shaggy hair with a woolly undercoat, which protects them against the cold in the high altitudes of Tibet. The hair usually hangs down like a skirt and can even reach the ground. Covered mostly or entirely by this long hair, yak tails are more horse-like than the tails of most other cattle, which tend to feature hair only at their ends.

Male yaks live in bachelor herds for most of a typical year. They rut and establish dominance as the mating season starts in the summer. A female yak carries only a single calf at a time, exceptional circumstances notwithstanding; pregnancy lasts for around 270 days, so the calf is born in the following spring. The calf is weaned for a year, after which it becomes independent. Unless food is abundant, females usually only give birth once every other year.

Trivia

  • Both wild and domesticated yaks possess large lungs, a high red blood cell count, and higher concentration of haemoglobin than most other bovids. These factors allow them to live in higher elevations that would give other, non-acclimated animals elevation sickness.
  • White-colored yak are considered sacred in Tibetan culture.
  • Gansu region is one of the top producers of yak with white coloration.
