The Ezo mountain hare ''(Lepus timidus ainu)'' is a subspecies of mountain hare found in Hokkaido, Japan. It inhabits a wide range of environments from the plains to the sub-alpine zone of Hokkaido. Although previously believed to be a subspecies of the Japanese hare that lives south of Honshu, further research has revealed that it is in fact a subspecies of the mountain hare. | |||
They are primarily nocturnal, but in winter they are active during the day. They are herbivores and eat grass in the summer when the grass is lush; they also eat vegetables found in fields. In winter, when there is snow covering these grasses and vegetables, they dig holes in locations where the snow cover is thinnest—tree hollows, elevated roots, collections of branches, and other spots which might create a hollow below the snow cover—to feed on the grass growing underneath. They dig these holes not only to eat, but also to hide within the hole's depth of 50 cm to 1.5 m (meters). Their home range is about 10 to 20 hectares, which is smaller than that of other mountain hare subspecies.
