The Margay cat is a very special, special cat. They are often confused with its near relative the Ocelot. Their coats are very similar, like the other cats, the Margay has a tawny background patterned with black-ringed rosettes and elongated blotches. Their fur is thick and plush and their tail is quite long, making up nearly seven-tenths of its head and body length. They use their long tail to act as a counterweight and aid in balance when traversing trees. They are sometimes called the tree ocelot because of this ability. While ocelots mostly pursue prey on the ground, the margay may spend its entire life in trees. Their ankles can turn up to 180 degrees and can grasp branches equally well with its hind and fore paws, they have been observed to hang from branches with only one foot. The margay is also known for its extremely large eyes which aids in its nighttime vision.

The margay is associated with forest habitats, both deciduous and evergreen. They range from South America all the way through Mexico and Central America. They prefer to spend most of their life in the trees, but also travel across the ground, especially when moving between hunting areas. Like most cats, they are solitary with adults only commonly meeting to mate. They are sparsely distributed even within their natural environment with large home ranges of 11 to 16 square kilometers. They use scent marking to indicate their territory which also includes scratch marks on the ground or on branches. Their vocalizations all appear to be short in range and do not call each other over long distances.

Margay cats are nocturnal and typically hunt at night however they have been observed hunting during the day. Due to their wide distribution in their natural most dietary studies have been based on stomach contents and faecal analysis. They hunt small mammals including monkeys and birds, eggs, lizards and frogs. It also eats grass, fruit and other vegetation, most likely to help with digestion. The margay is able to completely hunt in trees however sometimes they do hunt on the ground and have been reported to eat ground prey such as cane rats and guinea pigs. There has been one report of a margay using auditory mimicry to try to lure one of its prey. The cat was observed to imitate the call of an infant monkey while in the presence of a group of adults leading them to investigate. While the margay was not successful, this was the first observation of a South American predator employing this type of mimicry.
