A list of all Friends based on carnivorous mammals belonging to the family Felidae, collectively known as felids or cats. There are only two extant subfamilies within Felidae:
- Felinae, which is composed of the smaller—but not necessarily small in size—cats which are able to purr, but not able to roar. This includes species as large as the cougar, which has average weights as high as 72 kg (159 lb)[1] and can grow much larger,[2] and as small as the rusty-spotted cat, which can be as small as 1.1 kg (2.4 lb).[3]
- Pantherinae, which is composed of the large cats called panthers or big cats, such as lions and tigers. Panthers are able to roar, but not able to purr in the same manner as Felinae.
Felidae also includes a large number of extinct subfamilies, such as Machairodontinae, which is composed of the saber-toothed cats; this group includes famous genera such as Smilodon and Homotherium.
