Their beauty notwithstanding, leucistic birds are (in general) sometimes hunted for their rare feathers and thereby have a shorter median lifespan. Additionally, some research suggests that they fair less successfully in the mating game than their more common counterparts and that their feathers are weaker and more prone to wear, hindering flight. In Real Life
While often mistaken for albino, white peafowls are typically the result of leucism in regular Indian peafowls. Leucism is a hereditary genetic condition which keeps the birds from being able to distribute the pigment of their typical colouration to their feathers, resulting in a gorgeous and stunning all-white plumage. Their eyes under the effects of leucism become a striking blue-gray. White peachicks (peafowl offspring) are born a creamy yellow and gradually become all-white as they mature.
Unlike birds living with albinism, however, their natural lifespans are unaffected, and white peafowls are able to live relatively typical lives despite the physical differentiation which sets them apart from the rest of their species.
