In Real Life

A barn owl.

The barn owl is a medium owl species that occupy most of the world, with the exception of hot deserts and polar regions. Photogenically, there's at least three significant lineages of barn owl including 28 subspecies. The western barn owl for Europe, eastern barn owl for Asia/Australia, and American barn owl for North and South Americas.

The barn owl, regardless of species, all share similar physical features that define them as such. Nocturnal, black marble-like eyes, long claws, various shades of brown on their backs and wings, and a yellow-tinted white on the face and underside. Unlike other owls, barn owls do not hoot. Instead, they let out ghostly shrieks.

Barn owls are carnivorous, locating their prey with impressive accuracy via their strong sense of hearing. These are mostly small mammals, such as voles, shrews, and mice. They eat their prey whole, but cannot digest bone or fur. To resolve this, they regurgitate the remains in the form of a pellet.
