In Real Life
The Holstein Friesian Cattle is the most common and highest-producing dairy animal worldwide. Over 2000 years ago, the Germanic tribes selectively bred and culled black and white cattle to make most efficient use of the limited land and feed resources in the northern Netherlands and Germany, giving them their distinct black-and-white marking.
In the 17th century, migrating Dutch farmers introduced the Holstein Friesian to the US. While the cattle was used as an allrounder in Germany and the Netherlands, being used for its beef, milk and as a working animal, it was outclassed by the American Angus, which provided more and better beef, and horses, which were faster and more efficient as working animals. The Holstein faded away by being crossed into native North American cattle; the resulting Dutch Cattle breed becoming known for their dairy. With a new boom in dairy products in the 1830s, the Holstein was reintroduced and selectively bred to increase the already high production of low-fat milk.
In the early 1900s the newly improved breed found its way back to Europe. Through new modern breeding technologies such as cloning and artificial insemination the breed has become so optimized and popular that it's now bred and used all over the world, consequently threatening the existence of other breeds.
Trivia
- The breeds name derives from its places of origin, the German coastal region of Holstein and the German and Dutch coastal region of Frisia. The alternative spelling of Friesian appears to be used for animal breeds.
- US-President Howard Taft had an official pet Holstein cow named Pauline Wayne
- Current world record holder for most milk produced in a year is a Holstein cow named "My Gold-ET" from Wisconsin with 34,100 liters (77,480 pounds or 9,000 gallons) of milk in 2016
