Coyotes, or also known as prairie wolves or brush wolves, are dogs that are smaller and more lightly built than the typical wolf. The coyote, whose name comes from the Aztec word coyotl, is typically found as far north as Alaska, and as far south as Central America, however they are most abundant in the Great Plains. They stand 24 inches (60 cm) tall, weigh around 20 to 50 pounds (9 to 23 kg), and are around 3.3 to 4.3 feet (1 to 1.3 meters) long, including its tail. The fur of coyotes are normally shades or white and red, with a black-tipped tail, but they can vary in many sizes and color, and not just stay close to the average.

Coyotes are nocturnal, and very good hunters, who can run up to 40 miles per hour (64 km per hour). They are visual predators, but can smell and hear to locate prey when need be. They typically hunt down adult deer and hare. The larger the pack the coyote is in, the larger animals they tend to capture. Whenever coyotes cannot obtain the prey they need, they eat large amounts of berries and fruits, however they can become much more leaner in return. This is an example why coyotes can appear more fatter during the winter, when deers are easier to capture, other than the summer, when they are not.

Coyote populations have been in a constant steady pace since documentation at the start of the 21st century, and even though there has been hunting and harming of coyotes, their population rates don’t seem to be going down at all. In fact, overabundance of coyotes are more feared by the populous more than extinction, so the coyote fares well in that aspect.
