|introduction=Yatagarasu is a mythical Friend that debuted in the original Kemono Friends mobile game. She is based on the Three-Legged Crow as it appears in Japanese folklore.
|appearance=Yatagarasu's design, true to her corvine origins, is primarily composed of blacks and grays. Her mid-length, jet-black hair falls over a pair of striking ruby red eyes; the left of which glows in a fashion that obscures its ocular features. Perhaps as a reference to the bird's three legs, her hair is tied in three separate places; twice on either side of her head and once to the right in the back. Two grand, front-swept wings protrude from either side of her head, matching the wide rectrices of her tail.

Unlike Jungle Crow, who wears a seifuku-style school uniform, the three-legged crow dons a military jacket reminiscent of an all-black Imperial Japanese Navy admiral's jacket. Her epaulettes are silver, along with her tightly-closed collar. Yatagarasu's prim and proper uniform transitions into a wild, torn skirt featuring three intimidating black appendages that resemble talons; this is a direct reference to the three legs of the mythological bird. She wears black tights underneath her skirt as well as gray gloves, gray socks and simple black flats for shoes. Her conservative outfit covers the vast majority of her body, leaving only her face and the top of her neck bear.
|reallife=The word "Yatagarasu" (八咫烏) has been translated as "eight-span crow" (merely referencing its size) or "supreme crow" (an implication made based on the auspicious meaning of the number 8 in Japanese numerology). It is a key player in a major episode of Japan's national creation story, known as a messenger from the sun-goddess Amaterasu who led the country's first emperor, Jinmu, to the land which would later become Japan.

In the story, Emperor Jinmu was searching for a suitable land from which to administrate his new country. His clan set its sights on the Ki peninsula, located in modern-day Kansai. His older brother Itsuse no Mikoto had led the original migration to the new territory, but had been killed in battle with an enemy chiefdom. Jinmu concluded that they suffered this defeat because his brother and his cohorts had been defeated because they battled eastward, against the sun, and thus the emperor made the decision to land on the east side of the peninsula instead, and then march westward. They reached the ancient region of Kumano, where they met the three-legged Yatagarasu, interpreted as a messenger from heaven. The bird led them from Kumano to Yamato, where the clan once again battled the chieftain who had slain Jinmu's brother, and they were victorious.

Both Emperor Jinmu and the crow which guided him forward are immortalized in Japanese legend. The Yatagarasu is seen as the manifestation of divine intervention in human affairs. In Japanese folklore, it is not necessarily depicted as a deity in its own right, but rather as a messenger from the heavens.
|trivia=* Tripedal crows are present in Chinese and Korean mythology as well, known as Sanzuwu to Chinese and Samjok-o to Koreans.
* The Yatagarasu is honored by the Japan Football Association in both logo and in its rewards to the winners of the Emperor's Cup.
|reallife=The Superb Lyrebird is a ground-living songbird native to southeastern Australia with a brown to grey colour. Males reach a length of around 100cm, females around 85 cm. They have relatively small wings rendering them incapable of anything but short jumps and gliding. The males tail has 16 feathers with the outermost feathers acting as a frame, creating the look of a lyre; the ancient string instrument the bird was named after. Until the tail grows into that form beginning with age four, the young males are called "plain tails".

Lyrebirds are solitary and very territorial. Females build nests on the ground and are the sole provider for the young. They breed in winter and the females lay a single egg, raising the young for around nine months before they become independent. To find a mate, males raise and spread their tail as much as they can. They create their own songs by mimicking the singing of songbirds all around them. Their ability to mimic sounds is so good, they even impress females of other species with their singing. In their lifetime, they manage to master the songs of over 20 other birds. Specimen in captivity have even been able to accurately mimic man-made sounds including chainsaws, camera shutters, jackhammers and car alarms.

With their strong legs they dig in the ground to forage for worms, bugs and other invertebrates while simultaneously reducing litter that could cause or spread forest fire. They were introduced to Tasmania in an attempt to preserve the species, though it was never in any real danger of extinction and is currently increasing in numbers.
|trivia=*The bird is featured on the Australian 10 cent coin.

Resplendent Quetzals are a species of bird that lives the mountainous, tropical forests of southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and western Panama. Those birds are about the size of a pigeon, with characteristic metallic green and crimson red coloration. Male colors tend to be more vibrant and they have feathers on top of their head that forms a crest-like structure. But perhaps the male's most attractive feature is their magnificent tail, that can be up to 3ft. (90cm) long and it's said to reminiscent the movement of a snake when they fly.

Resplendent Quetzals spend their lives in very moist rain forest zones, among lush vegetation where their loud colors are somewhat camouflaged. They inhabit decaying trees and stumps where they excavate holes so they can use as a nest, usually located around 15-45 ft. from ground level. Resplendent Quetzals feeds mostly on fruits that resemble miniature avocados, but they also feed on insects, small frogs and lizards.
|trivia=* The word quetzal comes from the náhuatl "quetzal", meaning precious tail of shining and iridescent feathers.

* The Resplendent Quetzal is associated to several legends and myths by the pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations, including the gods Quetzalcoatl of the Aztecs and Kukulkan of the Mayans, both depicted as a feathered snake.
Her outfit mirrors that of a flight attendant uniform, which includes a navy blue side cap, a salmon vest and bow tie that go over a white shirt with puffy sleeves. In addition, she has a salmon skirt, and full length tights, that go from white at the top, to blue on the bottom, and she wears high heels.
|reallife=The passenger pigeon, from the columbidae family, has is believed to be extinct in the wild since around the 1900's, and completely extinct since 1914, when the last remaining passenger pigeon died at the Cincinnati zoo. The main reason for their extinction was over hunting however, there were many other factors to blame, such as deforestation. It began with the Native Americans hunting them, but was intensified following the arrival of the Europeans, and intensified once more when it was commercialized as cheap meat. This lead to mass hunting, following a slow decline beginning at around the 1800s, then gaining speed at around the 1870's, ending with what if believed to be last wild passenger pigeon being shot in 1900.

When passenger pigeons were alive, and in their prime, they were thought to be the bird with the highest numbers over time, at an estimated 3 billion to 5 billion, however, this number seemed to fluctuate greatly over time. This species of bird was known to be a very migratory bird, and often travelling in immense groups, blocking out the sun for several hours. The passenger pigeon was a sexually dimorphic species, both in size and colour, with the males generally had a grey upper area, and a lighter under area at around 390 to 410 mm (15.4 to 16.1 in) in length, whereas the female was generally duller than the males, and had an average size of around 400 mm (15.0 to 15.7 in) in length. Their diet consisted of mast, as well as fruits and invertebrates.
|trivia=* The passenger pigeon would often migrate in groups so immense, they would block out the sun for several hours, or even days, as written by John James Audubon
|reallife=
The Medium Tree-Finch is endemic to the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, in the Floreana Island. This is a small bird of around 12.5 cm in size, its color is mostly greyish-brown, with white and yellowish underparts that allows it to blend in with its surroundings. As its name implies it differs from Large Tree-finch (C. psittacula) mainly in having a smaller and less parrot-like bill, and from Small Tree-finch (C. parvulus) in having a larger one.

The Medium Tree-Finch lives in forested habitats such as evergreen forest, tropical deciduous forest, and humid scrub, usually found where they preferred nesting tree, Scalesia pedunculata, is dominant. They can be seen on the mainland and sometimes near the coast, but they are uncommon and very local to this island. They feed on insects, nectar, young buds and leaves, searching in the fissures of trees using their specialized beak, but they can also search under leaves and branches. This species is suffering a rapid decline, due to habitat destruction, alteration by invasive plant species, introduced predator and the parasitic fly Philornis downsi, which causes large decreases in the nesting success of the birds.
{{FriendBuilder
|introduction=Macaw is a type of Friend that appeared in Kemono Friends Pavilion. She resembles the famous Scarlet Macaw but there is no official word on her species as of yet.
|appearance=Macaw has red, short hair that lacks sharp curves, giving the end of it a resemblance to feathers. The middle part of it, close to the eyebrows, has a white band and a bang in the middle that is black and white, which represents the scarlet macaw's beak.

She has yellow irises, and a slightly darker skin tone than most Friends. She wears a white neckerchief with red stripes, which likely represents the red "bands" that can be seen around the eyes of a macaw. The scarf is tied with a golden woggle, or neckerchief slide.

She has a blue dress shirt shirt with two breast pockets. Its most notable feature is that it fades into green and yellow at the sleeves, which also have a feathery pattern sewed into them - this mimics the macaw's colorful feathers. She wears a long-sleeved shirt with red sleeves underneath.

She wears a red skirt with red leggings. The skirt in itself seems frilled, making it bear a slight resemblance to feathers, and is fastened with a black belt with a golden buckle, which has the Kemono Friends emblem printed on it. Finally, she has gray shoes, mimicking the gray feet of the scarlet macaw.

Like all other Friends, she possesses the traits of her respective animal alongside her humanoid body. Since she's a bird, she has the colorful wings of the scarlet macaw on her head, as well as a long tail.
|reallife=The Scarlet Macaw is a large bird native to central America and South America. They live in cavities and holes in trees left behind by large woodpeckers. Their feathers are red at the body and head and blue at the tips of their wings. A few yellow feathers form a border between the red and blue. Their faces and the top of the upper mandible are white while the lower mandible is black. They're around 80-90 centimeters in length from head to the end of the tail and weigh around one kilogram. Their beak is short and strong enough to easily crack open nuts and seeds. Their diet consists of a wide various of seeds, nuts, flowers, leaves, nectar and fruits. They even eat plants which are highly toxic to other animals; it is assumed they counter the toxicity with soil ingested at clay licks.

Macaws are highly social and intelligent birds which mate for life. They're usually in pairs or small families which can join with others into flocks of up to 50 birds, often together with other macaw or parrot species. Their breeding season varies depending on location, but is usually between October and April. During that time, they lay around one to four eggs which hatch after little under a month. The young will leave the nest after another 14 weeks and stay with their parents until the next breeding season starts. Sometimes they will stay for longer and their parents will skip the next breeding season; the young are reach sexual maturity with around four years of age.

Scarlet Macaws are threatened by habitat loss. Even though the species is protected by law in all countries in its range, illegal poaching for food and their beautiful feathers is widespread. They're also often illegally captured due to their popularity as a pet. Their population is slowly decreasing in the wild but they're still rather common as pets, so they're listed as least concern.

Macaws make excellent pets and companions if properly cared for. They require a wide variety of nuts, seeds, flowers, leaves and other fresh greens for their diet. They're very playful birds and require a lot of toys, swings and space. They need at least two hours of out-of-cage time and aren't suitable for anyone who doesn't have enough time for a highly social and intelligent pet. While they can imitate speech, they're very loud and may disturb neighbors and infants. They are known to self-mutilate and pluck their own feathers if they're in a confined space or highly unsatisfied. Macaws can become "one person birds" if not properly trained, meaning they will only be loyal and trusting with one person and will become nervous and aggressive towards other humans up to the point where they will attack and bite them, especially when they're jealous of others interacting with their favorite person or wrongfully sensing danger. In captivity they can reach ages of up to 80 years so it can become even more of a problem should they outlive their trusted person.
Her shoulder length hair is also black, with her bangs covering her left eye and fading to a gray-white color. Her eyes are a light, faded blue, and her broad feathered tail is fanned out wide and, like the rest of her coloration, black.
|reallife=The jungle crow is a common, widespread bird throughout Southeast Asia, with a large population in Japan. They are slightly bigger than the common American crow, with a thicker beak and more squared head making them appear more raven-like. Their nests are normally made high up on trees, usually conifers. While they used to be made with twigs, the crows have adapted to their urban environment using wire clothes hangers instead. However, jungle crows do not breed during their first year.

Jungle crows appear black, but have a blue-violet sheen to their feathers. They roost in large flocks, sometimes numbering in the thousands. They have a linear dominance hierarchy, remembered based off individual recognition. Their diet is varied, going for pretty much anything edible they can find, be it plant or animal, alive or dead.

Their call is generally the same as most other species of crow, though usually deeper in pitch. They are also occasionally witnessed mimicking woodpecker drumming. There are not many predators for the jungle crow, with most deaths being attributed to illness or parasites.
|trivia=* Several field fires near Fushimi-Inari shrine in Kyoto have been attributed to crows flying away with lit candles for their wax, which is often made from Tallow.

* The nests they build out of wire clothes hangers can sometimes cause blackouts when made too close to power lines. Because of this, the governor of Tokyo assembled a task force to locate and destroy crow nests made with this wire.

* These crows take advantage of cars to crack open tough nuts. They wait for the lights to show it is safe to cross a crosswalk, place walnuts on the road, and after they are driven over and cracked open the crows fly back out at the next traffic cycle to retrieve the nut.
Japanese Cormorants are birds that live on the Pacific coast of Asia, breeding on the corresponding coasts of Russia, North and South Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan. They are seabirds with long necks and bills, growing to be at about 90 cm in length and with a maximum wingspan of 130 cm. The black feathers gives them a sinister look, but they also have iridescent green and bronze feathers and thin white feathers that extend out from their head and neck.

Comorants nest in groups on rocky coastlines, rarely living inland. Carnivores, their diets are mainly comprised of fish, which they hunt by diving underwater. Humans have historically used these birds, with fishermen training those seabirds to catch fish for them. By tying a rope to the base of the neck, loose enough so only small fish can pass through, the fisherman waits until the bird captures a large fish and removes it from their throat, although this method is not as common today because more efficient techniques exist.
|trivia=Cormorant fishing can still be seen in Gifu City, in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Fisherman near the Nagara River have been using this traditional fishing method called "ukai" for over 1300 years.
|appearance=Greater Flamingo's long hair is pale pink in color and reaches down to her waist. Bangs cover the sides of her face. Her two center bangs are symbolic of a beak; they're lighter in color than the rest of her hair, and are tipped black. On top of her head is a pair of wings. The side facing away from Greater Flamingo is colored black, whereas the other end is pink-red. Inbetween the two, the wings are colored the same shade of pink as the hair. Greater Flamingo's tail is light pink in color, although it fades into a pale red at the tip. Her eyes are light yellow.

Greater Flamingo is dressed in a pink blazer and a matching miniskirt. Underneath her blazer, she wears a white shirt and a pink-red tie. Around her neck is a scarf colored much like her tie. Below her miniskirt, she wears pink-red tights, and a pair of red loafers.
|reallife=The greater flamingo is the largest member of the flamingo family. It's a very widespread species, distributed in southwest Asia, southern Europe, and various parts of Africa. Greater flamingos have a pale white plumage. Their primary and secondary flight feathers are black, while their wing coverts are crimson. The beak and legs are pink in color, with the beak being tipped black. The call of a greater flamingo is a honking sound, much like that of a goose.

Greater flamingos feed primarily on shrimp, diatoms, mollusks and insects. They do so by putting their bill upside down in the water and sucking in food, filtering it from the mud and water. Greater flamingos have very few natural predators, although their eggs may be preyed on by other birds. Potential dangers to greater flamingo populations include disease, pollution, lead poisoning and habitat loss.

Greater flamingos inhabit shallow bodies of water, such as lagoons, lakes and estuaries. They are very social birds, occuring in colonies of up to even 200,000 nesting pairs, although they most often number a few tens of thousands. They typically lay one egg in a mud mound, which hatches after a month. The hatchling then leaves the nest after a week. Chicks fledge after around 65 to 90 days. The birds reach maturity after around 3 years. While the average lifespan in the wild ranges from 20 to 30 years, in captivity it can reach over 60 years.
She also has a headband with an oval orange section at the ends, meant to represent the eyes of a Gastornis. She has yellow irides with no highlights, signifying her animal species is extinct.
She has a large red furred collar tied by a ribbon of similar coloration - this ribbon fades into yellow at the tips. Below is a white sleeveless shirt, followed by a brown corset and an armored skirt of the same color with iron buttons. It has a furred end.
Her arms and legs have various bandages tied around them, and she wears brown sandals.
Like other Friends, she has traits of the animal species she belonged to in her otherwise human body - that includes a large blue and red tail that belongs to the Gastornis animal, and since she is an avian, she has wings of the same color on her head.
|reallife=Gastornithidae was a family of large flightless bird species native to what is now Central Europe and the United States roughly 45-60 million years ago. All species were about 2 meter tall, flightless birds, similar to ostriches. It is unknown what kind of feathers they had, it is assumed they were hair-like similar to those of modern ratites, such as the emu or cassowary. Despite the similarities to modern large flightless birds, gastornis is more closely related to small waterfowl such as ducks, geese and swans. Their underdeveloped wings assumedly didn't have much purpose besides being used as a mating display.

For decades since it's initial discovery, gastornis was assumed to be a carnivore due to its large, strong beak. However, the beak did not have a hooked tip which is very common in other meat eating birds as it helps in killing prey and tearing off meat. Gastornis is also lacking sharp, curved talons unlike other birds of prey. Instead, the beak would be used to crush seeds or fruits with hard shells. To prove this theory, scientists have analyzed dietary clues in the birds preserved bones and carbon isotopes and compared it with other herbivores from the same time period and modern birds of prey.

The reasons for gastornis' extinction are unknown but believed to be either increasing competition with mammals or more likely, climate change.
|introduction=Dodo is a type of extinct avian Friend that appeared in the original Kemono Friends mobile game.
|appearance=Dodo's hair is of short length, ending just past her jaw and at the base of her neck. She has dark brown hair, overlapping purple bangs and hair band, ending in dark brown to represent her beak. She is of medium stature and has a light brown tail.

Her clothing consists of a dark brown button-up shawl, trimmed with light brown fur over a brown button-up sweater. Her leg wear is made up of a light brown short skirt over purple stockings and thigh high boots, with dark brown toes representing her claws.
|reallife=The dodo is a large, extinct, flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Sea. The island was discovered in the early 15th century and the first recorded mention of the dodo was by Dutch sailors in 1568.

Fossil remains show the bird to be around one meter tall and weighing 23-39lbs. The dodo's appearance in life is only evidenced by drawings, paintings and written accounts of the 17th century. Due to these varying significantly, the exact appearance of the dodo is unknown. Most accounts depict them having brownish-grey plumage, yellow feet, large tufts of tail feathers, a naked head and a large yellowish-green beak.

While most recollections depict the dodo as a plump, clumsy flightless bird, more recent studies show the bird to have been well adapted to its habitat. Their diet is believed to have been fallen fruit, nuts, seed, bulbs, roots and possibly crabs and shellfish like it's modern-day relative the crowned pigeon. They swallowed small stones to store in their gizzard, aiding with digestion by grinding down food, similar to many modern-day birds.

Prior to sailors arriving on Mauritius in the 15th century, the dodo faced little to no natural predation. This, and an abundant food supply, lead to the dodo's evolution into the large, flightless birds that we know them as. After mans arrival, the dodo's population fell into a steep decline. Showing little to no fear of humans, they made easy meals for hungry sailors and were herded onto boats, or simply hunted, to replenish food stocks. Their arrival also introduced predators such as dogs, cats, pigs and rats which preyed on, and competed with the dodo for food. This, along with the dodo's single egg clutch, and their forest habitat being destroyed led to the dodo's rapid decline. The last recorded sighting of the dodo was in 1668, with its extinction not immediately noticed.
|trivia=* The dodo is commonly used as a example of extinction in modern culture.
Chicks look quite different, with a plump body and covered in light brown feathers. The Brushturkey can grow to be as long as 75 cm with an 85 cm wingspan.

Australian Brushturkeys breed year-round, though they mainly breed from September to December. The male Brushturkey will build a mound out of organic matter for the eggs. Each mound is around 1 meter tall and 4 meters wide. Generally a male will have a single mound, but occasionally one male will build multiple mounds. Brushturkeys will check the temperature of their mound with their bill, and will add or remove material to keep the temperature of the mound at approximately 33° C.
|reallife=
The Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca) is a member of the duck, goose, and swan family Anatidae. Egyptian geese are anywhere from 63 to 73 cm in height and they can weigh from 1.5 to 2.3 kg. The wingspan is fairly large, measuring 38 cm, on average. Distinguishing between males and females can be a challenge. The females are smaller than the males, but otherwise both sexes look alike. One way to tell them apart is by their sound.

This species inhabits a variety of wetland habitats in open country, including rivers, dams, lakes, reservoirs, marshes, estuaries, sewage works and sometimes offshore islands, and it occurs at elevations of up to around 4,000 metres in Ethiopia. The Egyptian goose generally avoids densely forested areas, appearing to prefer water bodies with open shorelines, close to grasslands or agricultural land where it can graze.

These geese stay together in small flocks throughout the year, mainly for protection. Egyptian geese pair up during the breeding season, but otherwise they remain in their flocks. Egyptian geese swim, travel and feed in flocks. Living in flocks may be a defense against predators since there are more individuals present to look out for predators and give a warning. Although they are mainly sedentary, they move to another body of water if a period of drought occurs in their current home range. They may wander from the water during the day in search of food in either the grasslands or agricultural fields. They always return to the water at night.

Egyptian geese are mainly herbivores, its diet consists predominantly of vegetable matter such as the seeds, leaves and stems of grasses and other terrestrial plants, crop shoots such as maize, wheat, oats, lucerne, groundnuts and barley, potato tubers algae and aquatic weeds, as well as some animal matter such as worms, locusts and termite alates.

The Egyptian goose is a widespread and relatively common species, and is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction.
|reallife=
The black swan (Cygnus atratus) is a large waterbird, a species of swan. Their feathers are mainly black in colour but they have a line of white flight feathers on the edges of their wings. These feathers are sometimes on show when they are at rest but they are conspicuous in flight. Their bill is bright red with a pale bar and tip, and their legs and feet are grey/black in colour. Their neck is long and "S" shaped and while swimming they either hold their neck arched or straight and they often carry their wings raised in an aggressive display. 2

Black swans live in lakes, rivers and swampland, which can be fresh, salt or brackish water. They prefer habitats with aquatic vegetation. While their natural habitat is aquatic they are sometimes found in terrestrial areas such as dry pastures or flooded fields when food is scarce. They are nomadic birds with no set migratory pattern, they have opportunistic responses to either rainfall or drought. 3

They prefer habitats with aquatic vegetation. Diet is mainly leaves of submerged aquatic plants such as
Ruppia, Egeria and Zostera but they will also graze on pasture grass and clovers, much to the ire of farmers. 1

Black swans tend to move in flocks, they are the least territorial of all swans and sometimes nest in colonies. They are nomadic when food is scarce but are otherwise sedentary. They feed at dusk and travel at night, calling as they fly, but most activity is during the day. Nesting habits depend upon the locality and food supply but may nest colonially. The black swan is very aggressive when defending its territory and nest from intruders, including other swans. 1 3

The first European to see a black swan is believed to be the Dutch sailor Antonie Caen who described the species during his visit to the Shark Bay area in 1636. Later, the Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh captured several birds on the Swan River, Western Australia in 1697, but many people in Europe did not believe him, as at that time it was believed that all swans were white. Three of the captured birds were taken to Batavia, where they lived for some time. However, the species wasn’t reported again until the arrival of the ‘First Fleet’ in 1788. The black swan was first described scientifically by Dr. John Latham in 1790. |introduction=Southern Brown Kiwi is a ratite Friend who made an appearance in the original Kemono Friends mobile game.
|appearance=Southern Brown Kiwi has short, thick, amber-colored hair, with the colors on her bangs gradually getting lighter. The very center bang of her hair is noticeably longer than the other bird Friends', and has a reddish coloration to represent a kiwi's bill. She wears a dark brown fur poncho with light brown highlights on the top and bottom. Below the fur-like collar is a blue-colored drawstring tied together in a bow-tie fashion holding the poncho together, with light brown puffs on the respective ends. She appears to be wearing amber-colored gloves, leggings, and mary-janes, along with a fur-accented dark blue skirt.
|reallife=The southern brown kiwi, also known as the tokoeka, is a type of kiwi native to New Zealand's South Island. These flightless birds are roughly the size of a chicken, making them by far the smallest member of the ratite group of birds. They do not have a tail, and while their short wings prevent them from flying effectively, their powerful legs allow them to escape from predators quickly.

The brown kiwis typically reside in the large, temperate forests of South Island, allowing them to blend in the surroundings easily with their brownish-grey feathers. To compensate for their poor vision, these birds have developed a strong sense of touch from the whiskers on the base of their bills. This, along with their bills' long, drill-like shape, allow them to handily burrow and pick out potential prey. Kiwis primarily feed on a diet of small invertebrates, such as worms, moths, and crayfish, although they have also been known to feed on various fruits and berries.

Brown kiwis have been described by some as being an "honorary mammal", owing to their highly mammal-like traits. During the day, the kiwis will hide inside their burrows while coiling up into a ball to avoid confrontation with predators, which include stoats, cats, and dogs. When nightfall comes, the birds come out of their holes to hunt for food. They are usually shy towards other animals, but often travel in groups of six to twelve.

Brown kiwis communicate through a particularly unique, whistle-like cry. The females' cries sound low and hoarse, while the males' sound slightly shrieking. They will occasionally call each other at night to advertise their territories or to maintain contact with their respective mates. The kiwis are highly territorial and will fight conspecifics with their sharp claws.
|trivia=* The brown kiwi is the national bird of New Zealand, which is evident from the abundance of kiwis on many New Zealand-related symbols (currency, sports uniforms, road signs).

* The cry of male kiwis have been described as sounding as if it was shouting "kee-wee".
|reallife=
This particular moa lived on the North Island of New Zealand, and lived in the lowlands (shrublands, grasslands, dunelands, and forests) Slightly smaller than the South Island giant moa, the North Island species was the second tallest of the nine moa species, standing up to 2 metres at the back and up to 3 metres with neck stretched upwards. Both giant moa species (genus Dinornis) had relatively long, shaggy hair-like feathers up to 18 cm long, covering the body, and exhibited the greatest size difference between males and females of any bird, with adult females being much larger than adult males.

Based on their skull and bill morphology and the frequent presence of large masses of gizzard stones, it is likely that North Island moa consumed a fibrous diet of twigs and leaves. Flowers, berries and seeds from trees, shrubs and vines were also taken, but they consumed few herbs or grasses.

The main cause of extinction was overhunting by humans for food. Moa chicks may have also been eaten by the introduced Polynesian Dog.

The relatively long leg bones of giant moa indicates that they were more agile than other large moa species, and a large olfactory lobe suggests that they had an acute sense of smell.

The remains of a large white moa egg (190 x 150 mm) thought to be from this species was found in a rock shelter near Waitomo Caves. It is estimated that this egg would have weighed over 3 kg when fresh.
|reallife=The greater Rhea is a large flightless bird native to south america. It's the largest bird species of the Americas. Their plumage is grey with some black and a black ring around their neck. The feathers are long and plume-like, since they aren't used for flying. Their feet are long and powerful legs are grey and developed for running. Usually their diet consists of plants, seeds and fruits but they also often eat lizards, small birds and insects.

Male greater rhea will become territorial and solitary during the breeding season in spring. They build big nests and try to attract female mates by dancing and calling. The females will each lay an egg into one males nest every other day for a few days until they move to the next nest. The eggs will hatch after about 35-40 days and they will follow the male, who will take care of them for around 6 months. The males will be very territorial and protective of their young during that time. The young are ready for breeding with 2 years of age for females and 3 years for males.

During winter, the greater rhea lives in groups of around 30 birds who will graze along other herds of animals, like deer and domestic animals, in order to look for more food and protection from predators. Both the greater rhea and its eggs are used for food, its skin as leather and feathers for feather dusters. The bird is seen as a pest for farmers even though they benefit farming by eating insects and weeds from the crops. Though they like crops, habitat loss for farmland is a major issue for the greater rhea populations in south america; overall, the bird is still classified as near threatened.
|trivia=*In 2000, a group of 7 greater rheas, consisting of 3 males and 4 females, escaped a private enclosure near Lübeck, Germany. Due to the sparsely populated area which was difficult to access, the birds managed to escape officials long enough for them to give up, expecting the rheas to be unable to survive the German climate and die off. However, the birds seem to thrive in the area, current population estimates are at 220 specimen living in a 150qm area east of the Ratzeburger See in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. conservationists are concerned about the invasiveness and impact of the greater rhea on native fauna, flora and crops but evidence suggests there is next to no negative impact. The species is still on the "grey list", meaning they will be observed for their invasive potential. By law, the bird has acquired the status of native species (by surviving for 3 generations without human help) in Germany and qualifies for special protection.
|reallife=
Ostriches are large, flightless birds that have long legs and a long neck that protrudes from a round body. Males have bold black-and-white coloring that they use to attract females. Females, on the other hand, are light brown. Ostriches are bigger than any other bird in the world. They can grow up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and can weigh up to 320 lbs. (145 kilograms), according to the African Wildlife Foundation, and an ostrich's eyes are 2 inches (5 centimeters) in diameter — the largest of any land animal.

The ostrich is the only bird that has two toes on each foot. All other birds have three or four toes, according to the American Ostrich Association. Autrichs can run at up to about 70 km/h, the fastest land speed of any bird. The common ostrich is the largest living species of bird and lays the largest eggs of any living bird. An ostrich's powerful, long legs can cover 10 to 16 feet in a single stride. These legs can also be formidable weapons. Ostrich kicks can kill a human or a potential predator like a lion. Each two-toed foot has a long, sharp claw.

Ostriches are omnivorous birds that consume a mix of meat and plants that they forage, although they usually prefer the latter. Some common elements of the ostrich diet are fallen fruit, seeds, shrubs, shoots, gourds, dry and hard foliage, frogs, roots, plants, tortoises, tiny lizards and bugs such as locusts. In terms of fruit, ostriches eat a lot of wild figs and berries.

Contrary to popular belief, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand. The old saw probably originates with one of the bird's defensive behaviors. At the approach of trouble, ostriches will lie low and press their long necks to the ground in an attempt to become less visible. Their plumage blends well with sandy soil and, from a distance, gives the appearance that they have buried their heads in the sand.
Greater Honeyguides are a species of bird widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The males are usually around 20 cm long, while having common brown plumage with black throat, white cheeks, pink bill and yellow/golden shoulder patch that can bee easily seen during flight. Females are more grayish brown and white underparts similar to the males.

Greater Honeyguides can be found in open areas such as savanna, woodlands, grassland and more dray areas, preferring areas that are rich in food resources and host avian species. Those birds have an unique diet, feeding extensively on beeswax, as well as honeybee larvae and eggs and other various insects. Those birds get their name from an unusual trait found in this and other honeyguide species. They call and flare their tail feather to lead other stronger species to hidden beehives, in the hope that they will expose the wax stores that the honeyguide cannot access by itself.

Greater Honeyguides are nest parasites, laying their eggs in the nest cavities of other avian species. The honeyguide young hatch will use its hooked bill to kill any chicks in the nest, securing that they will receive all feeding attempts by the parents.
|appearance=Red Junglefowl's old design had long and orange straight hair with a red tuft of hair and two yellow fringes on the front. She weared a closed jacket with two buttons, two pockets on chest's level, sleeves and collar rolled up with a red bow attached around her neck. She weared a very short circular skirt with pressed-in ridges, blue thigh-high socks with white lace up thigh high boots. As the animal she is based on, she had the wings and the tail.

The Red Junglefowl's new design replaced the red tuft of hair to looks more like a cockscomb, as for the hair's colors which are closer to the real animal she is based on. Her top is darker, she has additional buttons and pockets, with orange rolled up sleeves, collar and pockets. Her bow is larger. Her skirt is more blue, has black thigh-high socks. The boots remains the same.
|reallife=
The Red Junglefowl (scientific's name known asGallus Gallus) is a tropical member of the family Phasianidae. It was first domesticated five thousand years ago in Asia. Since then it has spread around the world, and the domestic form is kept globally as a very productive food source of both meat and eggs.

The colourful male (about 80cm) has white ear patches and a white puff at the base of his tail. The drab female (about 40cm) has dull brown streaky plumage. She also has white ear patches and lacks a comb or wattles on her head. Their feet are lead-grey.

These birds can fly quite a distance, for example to cross rivers, and quite high, spiralling upwards to the tree tops. In fact, they roost in trees. They prefer forest edges, but elsewhere, they are found in habitats ranging from mangroves to high mountain passes.

The Red Junglefowl is an herbivore and insectivore. Red junglefowls eat corn, soybean, worms, grass, and different kinds of grains found on the ground. They cannot detect sweet tastes. They can detect salt, but most red junglefowl do not like it.

Red junglefowl regularly bathe in dust to keep just the right balance in their plumage. The dust absorbs extra oil and subsequently falls off. The Red Junglefowl has very distinctive social system involving a pecking order, with one dominating all, and one submitting to all. There is one pecking order for female and one for male.

The Red junglefowl is listed as 'Endangered' in the Red List of threatened animals of Singapore. They are not only affected by habitat loss but also by poaching and interbreeding with domesticated chickens.
|trivia=
* Gallus gallus can live up to ten years. The molting process, taking the old feathers and putting new ones on, for an adult, takes about three to four months every year. The memory of the red junglefowl is very short.

* It is said that they were first domesticated for cockfighting, later for religious ceremonies and only much later as food.
The Indian Peafowl is a native bird to the Indian subcontinent and the Green Peafowl breeds from east Burma to Java. Peafowl are mainly ground-dwelling birds preferring forests and farmland. They can also be found in bushlands and rainforests. Many will nest on the ground while some will roost in trees. Males are known as ‘Peacocks’ and females as ‘Peahens’. The male Indian Peafowls actual tail feathers are short and grey in colour and can only be seen from behind when the tail is extended and fully fanned. Female Peafowl lack the bright colours of the male and have a more duller appearance which is common in many other bird species.

Wild peafowl are ground feeders who scratch around in leaf litter to find most of their food early in the morning and around dusk. These birds aren’t picky and actively hunt insects, arthropods and small rodents, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. They forage for fruits, berries, seeds, grains, wild figs, drupes, seed heads and flower petals, and are known to feed on cultivated crops as well. The natural enemies of the peafowl are large cats like civets, tigers, and leopards. Wild dogs like dholes and jackals are also considered to be main predators.

This species is very cautious and always alert to spot any potential danger. Its head is always moving about, searching its surroundings for any predators. peafowl are diurnal, seeking protection high up in trees when it sleeps. The peafowl only flies to the lowest branch, and then works its way up branch by branch until it has reached a safe height. This can sometimes be a very obvious roosting place, but it is very effective for avoiding its natural predators.
She holds an orange pick on her right hand, and an orange gradient electric guitar that shows the Kemono Friends logo on the side, secured by a dark brown strap. She wears a beige undershirt, a wood brown single breasted jacket tied with sleeves that fade to light brown towards the tips, a black lace tie and a beige fur collar. Underneath, she wears a short cream circular skirt with black streaks, similar to the ones on her wings, coral red leggings and black loafers.
|reallife=
Also known as simply a 'chukar', the chukar partridge is native to the Middle East and sourthern Asia. However, they can also be found in the US after they were introduced to the country for the sakes of hunting. Despite this, they've established a thriving home in the more arid locales in western USA, and enjoy living amongst cliffs, mountains, and canyons.

Because of their love for drier regions, it can be tricky for the chukar to get food and drink. They get the majority of their food from seeds, berries, and leaves. During the summer they will also feast on the thriving insects that are around. During the winter, the chukar's diet consists almost exclusively of seeds.

Chukar males attract females by tilting their heads and circling the potential mate. Should the female accept, the pair may undergo practice feeding sessions for when they have chicks. When they do finally have offspring, the chukar nest will be situated on the ground, and will contain between 6-20 eggs. The female takes care of the eggs, but may divvy up half of the eggs for the male to take care of as well.

Unfortunately, the chukar's status as a game bird does mean it has a lot of predators. While in the egg, chukars can be victims to magpies, ravens, and snakes. When an adult, they can fall prey to cats, foxes, skunks, hawks, falcons, eagles, lions, and gray wolves. Of course, due to their nature of being introduced as a game bird, humans are always keen to hunt and eat wild chukar.

She possesses a tail and pink boots with white and black accents.
While she is a bird Friend, penguins are flightless - perhaps to accentuate this, she does not have wings on her head.
|reallife=
Rockhoppers are found bounding, rather than waddling, as most other penguins do, among the craggy, windswept shorelines of the islands north of Antarctica, from Chile to New Zealand.

Crustaceans, in particular euphausiids, make up the bulk of food items consumed during most studies of this species, but they also feeds on squid, octopus and fish. They efficiently adapt to the changing conditions of the area they inhabit, like the depth of the ocean or the prey available and according to this, manage their energy expenditure.
They are very nervous and temperamental. Clashes between individuals are common, flippers, beaks, and aggressive sounds are typical in these conflicts. Like all penguins, they can rest on their bellies, but they cover their faces with their flippers while resting on a rock or some place that they consider comfortable.

Researchers conclude that the declines observed in rockhopper penguin populations are a result of reduced prey abundance caused by global warming. In addition, rockhoppers suffer from the effects of overfishing and oil pollution. Although the world population of all rockhoppers is currently estimated at around 1.5 million pairs, the population has decreased by several million pairs since the early part of the 20th century, and it is estimated to have decreased by 30 percent in the past 30 years
|introduction=The Royal Penguin is a type of penguin Friend which first appeared in the Kemono Friends anime.
|reallife=
The royal penguin lives in the waters around Antarctica, much like other species of penguin. Their most noteworthy feature is the yellow plume of feathers across the top of their head, as well as their large size compared to other penguins. For a while, royal penguins were thought to be the same species as the macaroni penguin, which sports a similar plume of feathers. However, it was discovered that royal penguin's faces are mostly white, while macaroni penguin's faces are totally black. 1

Most royal penguins live on Macquarie Island, where no other species of penguins are known to reside. On Macquarie Island, the penguins form very large colonies, with one of the largest totaling at approximately 500,000 pairs. While foraging food, penguins can travel up to 600km away from Macquarie Island before returning in three week's time. 2

Royal penguins eat krill, fish, and squid. They achieve this by diving to depths of approximately 50-150ft and chasing down their prey. By using their flippers and feet, they can reach swimming speeds of up to 20MPH, which makes them highly effective hunters. 3 If left unguarded, the chicks and eggs of the royal penguin can be taken by predatory birds, such as gulls and petrels. Once the penguin reaches adulthood, their only predators are water-based animals such as seals and orcas. 4
|trivia=* Royal penguins were once hunted by a man named Joseph Hatch for their fats in order to make lamp oil. However, in 1919, the Government of Australia forbade their poaching for oil and allowed the penguin population to recover. 5

* Royal penguins lay two eggs, but the second, larger one is often the survivor and hatches first. If the first egg doesn't hatch at around the same time, it is kicked out of the nest. 6
She has thick, rounded gray eye brows, and pink irides with no highlights, signaling her species is extinct.
Like the other penguins, she wears a unique type of hoodie that continues past the sleeves and becomes a sort of glove, imitating a penguin's wings. However, unlike other PPP members, hers lack thumbs.
Giant Penguin's variation of the hoodie itself also has different coloration, being a gray that fades into black at the sleeves and 'gloves', with a white underside. The underside of the hood is black, tied by a zipper of the same color with a cyan LED on it. Just below the hood is a purple-to-blue pattern identical to the one seen on her hair.
The rest of the hoodie is completely white, and it turns into a frilled skirt at the bottom.
King penguins are typically what people imagine when they think of a regular penguin. They're the second biggest kind of penguin, being slightly shorter than the Emperor penguin. They are the brightest colored penguins, with their necks and heads sporting a striking orange-yellow color.

There's an estimated 2 million breeding pairs in the wild. King penguins can be found on subantarctic islands, such as the Crozet Islands, Kerguelen, Falkland, Macquarie, Prince Edward, South Georgia and South Sandwich. They're not restricted to the cold, however; King penguins have also been spotted in locales such as Brazil.

King penguins swim at an average of 5.2MPH, and can travel up to 1,200 miles in search of food. They enjoy eating fish and squid. Their feeding habits change during the day; at nighttime they stick to shallow waters, and at daytime they dive deeper into the waters for their fish. They can eat up to 450 fish per day.

Their main threats are leopard seals and orcas, who see them as prey. The eggs of King penguins are ideal foods for sheathbills, skuas, and giant petrels.
|trivia=* King penguins do not build nests, but instead keep their eggs warm using a leathery pouch above their legs.
A South American penguin that typically lives in coastal Chile and Peru, the Humboldt Penguin is named after the cold water current that it swims in. They are medium-sized penguins that grow to
about 22-28 inches. Females are slightly smaller than the males, but generally are similar in all other aspects.

Humboldt penguins nest on islands and rocky coasts, burrowing holes and sometimes nest in caves. Their diet typically consists of small-fish caught using their pristine diving skills.

Due to a declining population caused by over-fishing, climate change and ocean acidification, the Humboldt Penguin is currently threatened. The current global population is estimated to be between 3300 and 12000.
|trivia=* During the Tobu Zoo collaboration with Kemono Friends, a paper cutout of Humboldt Penguin was made and put on display. One penguin, Grape, was so attracted to the cutout that people assumed he was in love. Due to the popularity of the screenshots, fanart and merchandise pairing the two together became prominent, and Humboldt Penguin's VA met Grape. Grape passed away on October 11, 2017, 21 years old.
